According to Iranian media reports, Fazlollah Heshmati Razavi, a renowned researcher and prominent figure in the field of Persian carpets, has passed away at the age of 86.
The Scientific Persian Carpet Association of Iran published a statement confirming his death, noting that Mr. Heshmati Razavi dedicated over half a century to preserving and promoting the art and industry of the Iranian carpet. The association added that he was widely recognized among professionals in the field for his “integrity, honesty, and professional commitment.”
Born in 1940 in Mashhad, Fazlollah Heshmati Razavi authored several seminal works, including From Carpet to Heaven (Az Farsh ta Arsh), The History of Carpets, and Art and Industry Management of Iranian Carpets.
Carpet industry experts and cultural advocates noted that his passing, following the losses of other foundational figures such as Siawosch Azadi, Cyrus Parham, and Habibollah Ayatollahi, marks a significant decline in the ranks of the prominent older generation of Persian carpet scholars. Today, only a few legendary figures of that era, such as Shirin Sourasrafil, Ali Hasouri, and Parvez Tanavoli, remain active in the field.
