Former prime minister Alexis Tsipras has said Greece should scale back its close alignment with the MAGA movement and take a more independent stance toward the United States, according to an interview with Politico.
Outlining his political agenda ahead of a general election expected by next spring, the left-wing politician criticized conservative Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for what he described as excessive concessions to the United States, contrasting Greece’s approach with Spain under Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, who restricted US military use of bases there.
While much of Europe is distancing itself from MAGA-aligned politics, Tsipras said Greece is moving in the opposite direction as Mitsotakis’ government deepens defense and security cooperation with Washington. He pointed in particular to Greece granting the United States expanded access to key military installations, including the strategic naval base on Crete, under long-term arrangements without regular renegotiation.
Tsipras said Mitsotakis had gone too far. “Greek-US relations are strategic in nature and must be guided by mutual benefit,” he said. “The government is pursuing a policy of blank checks, and this does not serve our national interests.”
