Genevieve Levy's viral fruit fly trap will dramatically reduce the number of fruit flies in your kitchen – and all you'll need is a few ingredients you likely have in the cupboard07:03, 03 Jul 2026Fruit flies can become an absolute nightmare during the summer months, and getting rid of them feels like a losing battle because you're plagued by them. Everywhere you turn, there seem to be swarms of the little pests, leaving you feeling utterly exasperated.‌However, Genevieve Levy has revealed a brilliant solution that racked up 1.4 million views, as she shared her secret to keeping her home completely free of irritating insects, and all you need are some basic household ingredients. Genevieve discovered that fruit flies were constantly flying around her kitchen, even though she cleaned it regularly and didn't have any overripe fruit lying about, which is typically what draws the flies in.‌She admitted that "nothing is 100%" foolproof, but the technique she tried "dramatically reduced" the number of flies buzzing around her home.‌So, how do you banish these irritating fruit flies for good? Genevieve mixed four ingredients together to make a simple solution. All you need to do is combine washing-up liquid with sugar or honey in a bowl, add a splash of vinegar, and then top up the mixture with water.‌Genevieve then covers the top of the bowl with cling film, using a knife to poke holes large enough for flies to enter the mixture, but too small for them to escape."And then literally just put it on the side where you normally get some [flies]," she explained. She positioned hers next to some "concoctions", which appear to be fruit juices, on her kitchen worktop, and says it draws in nearly all of the fruit flies in the vicinity.‌Genevieve also suggests pouring boiling water down the kitchen sink, as this is a common spot where fruit flies tend to lay their eggs.In the comments section, one grateful viewer called her a "lifesaver," revealing they'd been "struggling for days".They said: "I can't use the sprays because I'm allergic to whatever's in them, even after days of airing them out. I came home from the hospital after an emergency visit last week and must have left food in the bins, and they have been giving me hell since."‌Another viewer chimed in: "This trick also works without kitchen film! The fairy liquid traps them basically, and they're unable to fly away."Another hack if you have a fruit bowl and don't want fruit flies in the summer, then put some corks under the fruit, they absorb any moisture and stop the flies," offered another commenter. One further viewer enthusiastically replied that they were going to "do this now".Article continues belowWill you be trying this method?
