WIMBLEDON — It was always the question that remained unanswered.

When a group of players started a fight over wanting more prize money, you always wondered where they were expecting organisers to find the cash. It might be the ATP Tour and not Wimbledon who have come up with the latest idea, but it shows the direction of travel – and it is job losses for some, bigger pay cheques for others.

The proposals, pitched to the player council earlier this week, would slash the opportunities for those who have made doubles their specialism on the men’s tour by reducing draw sizes and halving the prize money pot for those events.

“Do the math on what that means for anyone outside the top 30: it will be impossible to make a living,” a statement on behalf of a large group of doubles players said.
