Sir, – You report that for operational reasons the Ukrainian army has refused the Irish Government’s offer of 27 light tactical armoured vehicles (“Ukraine refuses Irish offer of armoured vehicles”, July 1st). These vehicles were in addition to the previous provision by the Irish Army of military equipment and training. The Jesuitical argument put forward by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael is that these actions are supposedly not in breach of Ireland’s widely supported policy of military neutrality because the items and training supplied are “non-lethal” (in a direct sense). It is a peculiar position. In truth, of course, this is material support for an army at war and it is risible to suggest otherwise. The issue here is not what one thinks of Russian president Vladimir Putin’s assault on Ukraine – which, needless to say, I deplore – but the quiet erasure of Ireland’s anti-war foreign policy. We are being told that black is white, and are scolded when we point out that this State’s military neutrality is being disregarded. Let us at least be honest about these things. Moreover, it must be noted that these are the same political parties that insist that we trust them on the removal of the triple lock, claiming it will have no impact on Irish military neutrality. – Yours, etc,FINTAN LANE,Lucan,Co Dublin.
