Stating that the supply of eggs to government school students has been affected by a sharp increase in prices, Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has appealed to Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar to release additional funds to enable schools to procure eggs at market rates. The State government provides ₹6 per egg to schools. However, the market price of an egg has risen to around ₹10 in recent days, forcing headmasters to purchase eggs at higher rates. This has created financial difficulties in supplying eggs to students and, if the situation continues, could disrupt the regular provision of nutritious food to children, the MLA said in a statement, urging the government to provide additional funds to schools.Mr. Suvarna said eggs are an important source of protein and other nutrients essential for the physical and mental development of children. He said the government’s initiative to provide free eggs to students was commendable. Published - July 02, 2026 07:28 pm IST
