Sheffield Wednesday have secured the signing of Sil Swinkels from Aston Villa on a three-year contract, bringing in a young Dutch centre-back who spent last season making a name for himself in England’s lower leagues.
Swinkels, born January 6, 2004, arrives at Hillsborough after a loan spell at Chesterfield during the 2025-26 season that apparently did enough to convince Wednesday’s recruitment team this was a deal worth pursuing.

Before Chesterfield, he had loan spells at Bristol Rovers and Exeter City, quietly building a CV across the English Football League while Villa monitored from a distance.
The fact that Villa have retained matching rights on Swinkels is the most telling detail in this deal. It signals that Villa have not written the player off entirely.
