Social activists at Peravurani have called upon the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam-led coalition government in Tamil Nadu to replace the asbestos roofs of classrooms at the Panchayat Union Elementary School to protect the students studying there from health hazards.According to Narayanan of Peravurani, a social activist, little over 100 children were pursuing their studies from Class 1 to 5 at the PU School functioning very close to the Taluk Office at Peravurani.While three buildings exist on this premises, only one has a concrete roofing and others have the asbestos cement sheets for a roof, he pointed out.Claiming that students had to face sultry conditions during sunny days, human rights and social activist, Jabhahur Mohammed of Peravurani, resented that continuous exposure of children during hot sunny days to inhale microscopic asbestos fibres was a health hazard.School Management Committee member and social activist N.Venkatesan has called upon the State government to take steps to replace the decades-old asbestos cement sheets with concrete roof for the safety of students.
