Rúben Amorim is barely a month into his tenure at AC Milan and he’s already swinging for the fences. The Portuguese manager has identified Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk as his primary defensive target for the summer transfer window, a move that would bring one of modern football’s most commanding center-backs to San Siro.

Amorim, who was appointed as Milan’s head coach on June 16, 2026, replacing Massimiliano Allegri, is wasting no time reshaping the squad. And he’s got some heavyweight support: Zlatan Ibrahimović, Milan’s senior advisor, has described Van Dijk as a “dream” addition to the team.

Amorim’s aggressive rebuild takes shape

The Van Dijk pursuit isn’t happening in isolation. Milan has already flexed its financial muscle this window by signing Gonçalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain for a club-record fee of €74 million, roughly $84 million.

Van Dijk, born in 1991, would bring something Milan’s defense has arguably lacked: a presence so dominant that opposing strikers start second-guessing themselves before the ball is even played.
