It will go down as Harry Kane’s best-ever England moment, writes John Cross in Atlanta. And his spectacular winning goal will be remembered as one of the best in England’s World Cup history. Kane has 84 goals for England. It was undoubtedly his best - and most important. The brilliance of the goal, the pressure and the sheer context because England had nearly been on their way out to DR Congo in what would have been one of their worst-ever defeats. Then you have Jude Bellingham who has been England’s best player in this World Cup by an absolute country mile.‌Bellingham has been incredible, surely man-of-the-match in three of the four matches so far and was one of few good performers against DR Congo. These two will go down as the heroes of this World Cup and are undoubtedly the reason why England are still alive in this tournament. And, as for the rest…It is rare that an England team can have got through the group, navigated through a knockout round and have quite so many issues.‌It is a real worry for Thomas Tuchel ahead of England’s trip to Mexico City to play the joint hosts where the odds - and the crowd - will be stacked against them.If they win in Mexico then it will go down as one of the greatest-ever English sporting achievements. And not just because of the altitude, crowd and task.Let’s be honest, England have been way below their best. Why? Well, most of the players look knackered or carrying injuries after a gruelling season. But there are also issues all over the pitch. Jordan Pickford has been way off. He should have stopped DR Congo’s goal and his distribution has been poor. Maybe his reign as undisputed No.1 is finally in doubt.‌Tuchel has had an absolute stinker over the right back. Reece James is injury prone but Tuchel still picked him - and, guess what, he’s injured. Tino Livramento went home before the tournament started. You can only imagine what Trent Alexander-Arnold made of Djed Spence’s performance against DR Congo. You cannot persist with him. He struggled in a struggling team and should not be at the World Cup.John Stones is clearly not at the level required - he has barely played all season - because Marc Guehi and Ezri Konsa are playing and, at times, they look as if they have never met.‌It makes no sense. They did not concede a goal in the qualifying campaign. Now they look wide open. Nico O’Reilly has been massively underperforming.Declan Rice looks broken. After playing so well together, now Rice and Elliot Anderson look too similar. Anderson got better when Rice switched to right back.Noni Madueke just has not delivered - as hard as he tried. He offered no defensive cover. Marcus Rashford was so poor that England fans even gave him some stick against DR Congo.Anthony Gordon was woeful against Panama so got dropped. Then he only played well as a substitute against DR Congo. Bukayo Saka looks half fit and unable to start.‌Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney have barely had a chance. Dan Burn has been a mascot. The squad looks unbalanced and ill-prepared. Ultimately, they got through against DR Congo. But play like that against Mexico and they will get stuffed.Content cannot be displayed without consentTuchel has a phenomenal record in knockout football and maybe that is the reason why England somehow got through against DR Congo. But if they had gone out surely his position would have been under threat. It would have been one of England’s worst-ever defeats, their biggest World Cup humiliation and the manager hired to get them over the line would have fallen at the first hurdle.‌It really was that close. England need to step up. It is now or never and, having said all that, if they win in Mexico City then maybe it will give them the belief they can go even further. But, for now, this World Cup will be remembered for two players. Two heroes. Harry and Jude.Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
