A 72MW data center has been proposed for Thames Valley Park, Reading. The facility would replace office buildings used by Microsoft as part of its campus in the area. The tech giant has vacated multiple sites in the area, and last year consolidated operations into one larger building."With demand for office space declining, the proposed data center would provide a viable long-term use for the site and support the UK’s growing need for digital infrastructure," the project team said. The Thames Valley Park Data Centre includes BCS Consultancy as project manager, Hilson Moran as consultants, Arup as planning consultants, Twelve Architects & Masterplanners as the architects, and Alpaca Communications on PR and community engagement. The proposal is expected to support up to 245 construction jobs and at least 115 full-time equivalent roles in Wokingham once operational, the group said. It would require £200m ($266m) of construction investment.Power is expected to be provided by on-site fuel cells, reliant on natural gas, "while additional grid capacity is brought forward."The project team added: "The fuel cells will be future-fuel ready, meaning they can adapt as the gas network becomes greener and lower-carbon fuels, such as biomethane and hydrogen, become more widely available."The UK government has given gas plants until 2030 to begin injecting biomethane, and has made limited steps to promote hydrogen blending. The Thames Valley team said that they are actively exploring offsetting options, including biogas generation projects. It is also assessing options to reuse facility waste heat.Cooling is expected to be air-based and require limited water supplies. The facility would be built adjacent to Huawei's Reading offices. The project is still in the early stages, with a consultation event held on the 7th of July 2026, from 3pm until 7pm at Pearson Hall, Sonning, Berkshire, RG4 6UL.
