GoNow scooters said it will not give up without a fight as it challenges regulations after the National Department of Transport confirmed that electric scooters were illegal on sidewalks and public roads, and deemed as motorised skateboards.
The Stellenbosch Municipality in June confirmed that electric scooters, referring to GoNow scooters, were not permitted on public roads or sidewalks.
This came amid safety concerns from other road users.
“The National Department of Transport has confirmed that e-scooters are prohibited on public roads under Regulation 5(j) of the National Road Traffic Act," said the Western Cape Mobility Department.
