Virgin Australia has just revealed its game-changing new move that will allow passengers to change their flights, on the same day.Passengers who purchase a domestic Economy Flex Fare will now have access to Fly Ahead – a new app feature that allows you to move to an (available) earlier same-day flight with no change fee or fare difference.While Flex Fare passengers don’t have to pay a change fee, they did have to pay the fare difference when changing flights – but now they don’t have to. The Aussie carrier said with cost of living pressures and high inflation, the move is to help travellers, particularly those flying for business, avoid additional flight change costs.The airline’s group executive, Libby Minogue, said the one thing they hear consistently, particularly from business travellers, is that they want more flexibility and control when plans change.“That’s why we’re proud to be the only Australian airline offering superior flexibility to our Flex ticket holders, allowing them to switch to an available earlier same-day flight via the Virgin Australia app, without incurring a change fee or fare difference,” she said in a statement on Thursday.“The change will help our guests get home sooner, make an earlier meeting or maximise their time.”Ms Minogue said as households and businesses continue to navigate cost-of-living and inflationary pressures, the new enhancement gives passengers greater flexibility without the added costs often associated with changing travel plans.“It’s a simple change that delivers real value,” she added. The move comes as data obtained by the airline shows more than 44,000 Virgin passengers moved to earlier flights over the past 12 months, saving a combined 143,000 hours in airport dwell time. It also revealed 65 per cent of business travellers said flexibility influences their choice of airline.The new move offers a big shift from traditional flexible fares, which often require travellers to pay a fee for any changes and cough up the difference when changing flights. The Fly Ahead app feature was first launched for high tier Velocity Frequent Flyer members in May 2026, and has now expanded to domestic Economy Flex fare guests.
