Yan Diomande’s decision to choose Paris Saint-Germain as his preferred destination if he is transferred this summer was a huge blow to Liverpool. As they look to replace the now departed long-time star forward Mohamed Salah, signs suggested they were in pole position to sign German club RB Leipzig’s talented Ivory Coast international winger.Last month, The Athletic reported that, should a deal to bring Diomande to Anfield not materialise, there were alternatives: principally Brighton & Hove Albion’s Yankuba Minteh, Said El Mala of German side Koln and Matias Fernandez-Pardo at Lille in France.Recent reports have linked PSG’s Bradley Barcola to top clubs, including Liverpool, but The Athletic reported earlier this week that the European champions do not need to sell the 23-year-old. Regardless, they value him above the ₤116million ($153.6m) Manchester City are set to pay for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson.Diomande ticked so many boxes in terms of the profile of player Liverpool were seeking to fill the void left by Salah’s exit, even if the signing, especially with the fees involved, would have carried considerable risk. He was this summer’s priority target, so pivoting means that while the alternatives have desirable qualities, they may not be at the same level as the 19-year-old Ivorian.Liverpool do not have time to dwell on where to turn next, so The Athletic took a look at some of the alternatives they could target.RB Leipzig do not intend to lose Yan Diomande this summer, while the player favours a move to PSG over Liverpool (Molly Darlington/Getty Images)Yankuba MintehClub: Brighton & Hove Albion
