Two fires have swept through the F.E. Falz-Fein Askania-Nova Biosphere Reserve of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the Kherson region, burning 1,928 hectares of the protected area.
According to Ukrinform, the reserve reported this on Facebook.
Based on an analysis of Sentinel-2 satellite imagery from June 24 and June 29, the total burned area within the reserve's protected Southern sector amounts to 1,928 hectares.
The fire that broke out on June 29 also spread to adjacent agricultural land in the reserve's buffer zone, affecting an additional 566.6 hectares.
"As a result of the fires, protected zone sectors Nos. 50, 51, 67–69, 79–82, and 87–90 were completely burned, while sectors Nos. 32–36, 49, 52–54, 66, 70, 71, 78, 83, and 84 were partially affected," the reserve said.
