Minister for Higher Education P. Viswanathan inaugurated the co-educational system at the undergraduate level at the 184-year-old Pachaiyappa’s College on Wednesday.About 50 women students have enrolled in undergraduate courses, and admissions have been extended till August 15.“Co-education is very important. When we say a country is developed, we measure it by the percentage of women receiving education. So, of all things, women’s education is of utmost importance,” said Mr. Viswanathan. He also spoke about how the college has produced former Chief Ministers, IAS and IPS officers, judges, writers, and other distinguished personalities.Principal of the college, Baby Gulnaz, said that the institution had introduced co-education to inculcate equality and a healthy competitive spirit in classrooms. “Opportunities should be given to women, and the co-education system is a step towards empowerment. Moreover, the learning environment will become more inclusive which is necessary for students,” she said.A first-year B.Sc. Chemistry student Thanuja. M., said she was looking forward to pursuing her college education. “I am the first girl to apply for and get admission to the B.Sc Chemistry programme. I consider this as an opportunity because I have faced many hardships growing up. Even though I am nervous, I will make the best use of it,” said Ms. Thanuja.V. Parthiban, former judge, Madras High Court, and administrator of Pachaiyappa’s Trust spoke about the values that students need to uphold in a co-educational system. C.
