The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

The Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, on Wednesday assured Nigerians that the National Assembly was embedding constitutional and legal safeguards into the state police bill to prevent governors from weaponising the proposed outfit.

He acknowledged that public fears of abuse were legitimate but insisted that lawmakers were taking deliberate steps to address them in the constitutional amendment process.

Bamidele spoke with journalists at the State House after accompanying Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, to a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Responding to questions about widespread public anxiety that state executives could exploit decentralised police forces for political purposes, the Senate Leader did not dismiss the fears but drew a distinction between their existence and their inevitability.
