The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May stood at 8.1%. That compares to the upward revised 8.7% in May 2025, and the downward revised 9.1% in April 2026.

The figures, released Wednesday, are from the Labor Force Survey released by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). The number of unemployed people in May was 383,740, or 29,643 fewer as compared with May 2025 (-7.2%).

Unemployment in May also decreased by 48,028 people when compared with this past April (-11.1%), ELSTAT reported. The unemployment rate in women rose to 11.7% in May, up from 10.6% in May 2025, while that for men it declined to 5%, from 7.2% the previous year.

By age group, the unemployment rate for those 15-24 declined to 16.8%, from 20.7% a year earlier. For those 25-74, the unemployment rate fell slightly to 7.6% from 8%. In May, the number of people under the age of 75 who neither work nor look for a job, was 2,979,634, down by 24,552 as compared with May 2025 (-0.8%).

The rate increased by 25,121 people compared with this past April (0.9%). The number of employed people stood at 4,353,357 in May, up by 20,712 as compared with May 2025 (0.5%), and up by 18,654 compared with this past April (0.4%).
