A new interview published by Game Developer has exposed what anonymous employees describe as a string of troubling workplace practices at one of the most valuable studios in the industry. The allegations cover everything from opaque pay structures and a growing gender pay gap to mandatory crunch and broken promises over remote working. In the section below, we take a look at the recent reports about Rockstar Games. GTA 6 developer Rockstar under scrutiny after employees allege crunch and low payThree members of the newly formed Rockstar Game Workers Union (RGWU) spoke to Game Developer anonymously, citing fear of reprisals if they came forward publicly. The timing of the report puts the studio's culture under a spotlight that will be difficult to ignore. The most damning allegation concerns how Rockstar structures its pay. According to those interviewed, a significant portion of employee compensation is tied to bonuses that can shift at the discretion of a superior, with no obligation on the company to explain how they are calculated. One employee stated: "Employees want good pay, and if literally anything they do that year could affect it, they will naturally feel they have to be as pliable as possible to their boss's whims. Imagine [how you might feel if] a fifth of your salary could be withheld without any justification or based on a single surprise factor."The unpredictability of bonuses functions as a pressure mechanism, keeping workers compliant and discouraging pushback against excessive hours.Workers have also accused Rockstar of building crunch directly into employees' contracts, with one source noting that staff are required to sign an opt-out of UK Working Time Regulations. The source explained that this structure allows Rockstar to frame the extra hours as a compensated incentive rather than crunch, effectively sidestepping accountability. Here’s what one worker said about the same: "It seems the company thinks that offering specific and limited compensation as an incentive for overtime means it no longer qualifies as crunch,"Night shift workers have also found themselves worse off than before. Staff on night shifts say they no longer receive extra compensation for those hours. Other policy changes at Rockstar The median wage gap between genders also widened. As per one of those interviewed, the internal initiatives to address the disparity have since been scrapped entirely. Besides that, Rockstar also revoked the remote work policy. During development, employees were told they could continue working from home. However, they were later ordered to be back in the office. This mandate was not applied to everyone, with leaders still maintaining their flexibility to work remotely. Rockstar and Take-Two's ResponseTake-Two Interactive responded to the allegations by stating that Rockstar provides a fair work environment and rewards its employees well. On the question of formal union recognition from the IWGB, Rockstar said:"We value an open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders and will arrange to meet."This was all you needed to know about the new allegations surrounding Rockstar.
