The contractLos Angeles Kings signed Mats Zuccarello to a one-year contract for $1 million plus potential bonuses.Mark Lazerus: Mats Zuccarello is 38 years old. He’s 5-foot-8. He’s very, very slow. But there’s a reason he’s been a beloved teammate everywhere he’s been, and it’s not just his sparkling personality. Zuccarello, 16 seasons into his NHL career, remains one of the best passers in the league. If you’re a sniper, if you have a big one-timer, if you like hanging out by the back door, Zuccarello will find you — flatly, cleanly, perfectly. In Minnesota, he was Kirill Kaprizov’s security blanket and arguably the most important piece of the power play, and the State of Hockey nearly melted when he missed Games 2, 3 and 4 of the Wild’s first-round series against the Dallas Stars.Kaprizov’s loss will be Artemi Panarin’s gain in Los Angeles. Zuccarello might not even crack the top six with the Kings, but he’s a no-brainer to put on the top power-play unit, where he’ll have his pick of teeing up Panarin and Adrian Kempe one-timers or finding net-crashing Quinton Byfield or newly re-signed Corey Perry. And while the power play is his specialty, Zuccarello isn’t one-dimensional. As he approaches his 1,000th game, Zuccarello’s never had an xG percentage below 48.58, and he’s been above water in all but four of his 16 seasons. He’s responsible enough, and while he doesn’t drive play at five-on-five, he’s still effective at evens.
NHL contract grades: Kings’ deal with Mats Zuccarello is one of the best values in the NHL
This isn't the flashiest deal of the day, but the Kings signed a nearly point-a-game player for a hair above league minimum.
