He was an absolute monster in Columbus with some elite five-on-five impacts and incredibly efficient scoring. His 32 points in 39 games were good for a 67-point pace.Marchment is a real difference-maker and arguably the most valuable winger on the market. He doesn’t need power play time to shine and can do the heavy lifting to thrive next to either Macklin Celebrini or Michael Misa. His edge is an element that’s much-needed in San Jose’s top six. While he may be on the wrong side of 30, Marchment still profiles as a legit top six winger for the majority of a five-year deal. His play-style also suggests some solid scalability into a top-nine role as the deal ages. The main reason I loved Marchment as a UFA was the projected price. AFP Analytics figured Marchment would net a deal with an AAV at just $5.7 million, while I had his value closer to $7.5 million. The Sharks stretched out the term by one year and upped the cap hit to $7 million, which makes the value proposition much tighter than one would’ve hoped.Still, Marchment’s deal ends up on the positive side of the ledger and on a day where things tend to get wacky, that’s a major win. Given San Jose’s abundance of cap space and need to take a step forward, it’s an easy deal to like.Contract grade: B+
