As of July 1, 2026, Bulgaria has officially introduced mandatory vaccination against chickenpox as part of the country’s revised childhood immunization schedule, marking a significant expansion of the national prevention program aimed at reducing the spread of one of the most common pediatric infections.

Under the new framework, children will receive two doses of the vaccine. The first dose is scheduled between 12 and 15 months of age, while the second will be administered when children reach four years old. Health authorities expect vaccine supplies to be delivered to Ministry of Health storage facilities in the near term to support rollout.

The updated calendar also includes transitional rules for children born in 2025. Those without confirmed medical history of having had chickenpox are eligible for immunization. From the beginning of July, vaccination becomes mandatory for children born between January 1 and June 30, 2025. In cases where prior infection cannot be verified, the vaccine may still be safely administered.

Officials note that in 2026 there will be no separate revaccination campaign, since the second dose will apply only to cohorts included in the newly established schedule moving forward.
