The 25 MW facility, powered by renewable electricity via a PPA, will produce about 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, replacing grey hydrogen and becoming Spain’s largest by 2026.
Spanish utility Iberdrola and UK-based energy company bp have completed the construction phase of a 25 MW green hydrogen plant at bp’s Castellón refinery in Spain, developed through their joint venture Castellón Green Hydrogen. The partners have now begun commissioning tests at the facility. The companies expect the plant to start producing green hydrogen before the end of this year and to become the largest operational green hydrogen facility in Spain by 2026.The installation comprises five 5 MW containerized proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser modules supplied by US-based Plug Power, with which Acciona formed a joint venture in 2021. The hydrogen produced via water electrolysis using renewable electricity will comply with EU requirements for renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBO) and support bp’s plans to transform the Castellón site into an integrated energy hub.
The project is expected to produce around 2,800 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, displacing part of the grey hydrogen currently used at the refinery, which is produced from natural gas.The scheme involves the Energy Technology Institute (ITE) of Valencia and represents an investment of more than €70 million. It has also secured €15 million in funding under the Innovative Value Chain and Renewable Hydrogen Knowledge programmes of Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, backed by the European Union’s NextGenerationEU initiative. In addition, Spain’s Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, through the Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving (IDAE), has approved the reallocation of up to €211 million in IPCEI Hy2Use funding to the Castellón project.
