I tried every lasagne ready meal from Tesco to find the best one, and was surprised by the winner.07:16, 01 Jul 2026Updated 07:16, 01 Jul 2026Rich and indulgent, there's little argument about how a proper lasagne should taste. The perfect version is typically loaded with quality meat in a robust bolognese sauce, sandwiched between sheets of al dente pasta, bubbling with béchamel sauce, and crowned with a generous layer of cheese.‌It's a labour of love when made from scratch, but for those after a fuss-free alternative, supermarkets stock a vast selection of ready-made choices.‌I made my way to my local Tesco to collect every supermarket-own brand of lasagne available - both fresh and frozen - selecting the cheapest and most expensive versions to pit them against each other.‌Having been raised in a household where everything was cooked from scratch, I'm not usually a fan of ready meals. Yet one of the choices genuinely took me by surprise, and not in the manner I expected.Tesco Finest Lasagne Al FornoCost: £4.50Starting this taste test with the most expensive option, the Tesco Finest Lasagne Al Forno, which promises to deliver the "flavours of Italy". Of all the choices, my expectations were highest for this one - yet it proved to be the most underwhelming of the bunch.‌While the addition of Parmesan was a nice touch, the overall taste was undermined by an excessive amount of herbs stuffed into this ready meal. The bolognese sauce was lacking in salt, similar to several of the other choices, and had an overpowering smoky taste that failed to win me over.Rating: 3/10Tesco Beef Lasagne (frozen)Cost: £2Moving on to the cheapest option, the frozen beef lasagne - while not the worst, it ranked as the second-poorest lasagne of the bunch. The parsley crumb and red cheddar cheese topping, alongside the béchamel, didn't quite hit the mark. That said, it did manage to get the ratio of cheese sauce to ragù spot on.‌Rating: 4/10Hearty Food Co. LasagneCost: £2.20This chilled lasagne was the second cheapest of the entire line-up, and the most wallet-friendly amongst the fresh choices. Expectations weren't particularly high, yet it proved to be surprisingly decent. It actually surpassed both of the finest-range options when it came to flavour; however, the pasta was overcooked, and the sauce had that unmistakable taste of onions that hadn't been softened enough.‌Rating: 7/10Tesco Beef Lasagne (chilled)Cost: £3.50The Tesco standard-range beef lasagne shared second place overall. It featured a generous sprinkling of herbs, and the pasta sheets had a noticeably superior texture. The only gripe would be that a bit more cheese would have taken it to the next level.Rating: 8/10‌Tesco Finest Beef Lasagne (frozen)Cost: £3.50Priced £1 less than the chilled Tesco Finest lasagne, this frozen version turned out to be considerably more flavoursome - a real surprise given it came from the frozen aisle. The sauces were far better balanced and less overpowering. The addition of mozzarella balls on top was a nice touch.Rating: 8/10Article continues belowTesco Vegetable LasagneCost: £3.50Remarkably, this lasagne stood out as the best amongst everything tasted and is the sole option I'd contemplate buying again. Despite being meat-free, it was undoubtedly the clear winner.Brimming with beautifully roasted vegetables, a flavourful sauce, and an ample amount of cheese, the only drawback was requiring slightly more seasoning. It's worth noting, though, that every one of the ready meals examined could have done with a bit more salt.Rating: 9/10
