Shares of companies in the energy sector fell alongside oil futures, as markets keep an eye on on-again-off-again talks to restore shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

BP said its deputy chief executive, Carol Howle, plans to retire later this year, leaving new boss Meg O'Neill without an experienced executive at a time when the energy major has been hit by management turmoil.

Shares of Sable Offshore declined after the company disclosed plans for offerings of its common stock and convertible senior notes as part of an effort to repay a loan from Exxon Mobil.
