Please try again“Through this investment, we are reinforcing Canada’s sovereign satellite capabilities and equipping industry and the Canadian Armed Forces with the intelligence they need to protect communities, inform decisions and keep Canada secure.”The government is looking to involve domestic industry and will call on Canadian businesses to support the “design, manufacturing and integration activities” of the satellite contract, according to the Tuesday statement. It added that the project will create and maintain up to 100 “high-paying” jobs.Brampton’s MDA has embarked on a major push to secure more Canadian and global defence contracts. Analysts expect it to ink more Canadian government deals ahead as Ottawa aims to grow the share of defence contracts awarded to homegrown companies under its $6.6 billion Defence Industrial Strategy.On the security side, the Canadian military and the Department of National Defence use images and data from Radarsat satellites for Arctic and maritime surveillance alongside other intelligence and reconnaissance operations. The $688 million investment will continue providing the satellite data required for Arctic security and operations, aligning it with Canada’s defence and spending priorities outlined in the DIS.The new satellite will be assembled and tested at MDA’s Montreal facility, which is the world’s first large-scale digital satellite plant, and is targeted for launch in the early 2030s.
