In response to the European Union's decision to cap steel imports at 18.3 million tonnes per year, Ukraine is actively seeking alternative ways to secure access for its steel products to the EU market, including through the accelerated integration of Ukraine's steel industry into the EU's steel production ecosystem.

Ukraine's Ambassador to the European Union, Vsevolod Chentsov, said this in an exclusive comment to Ukrinform.

During negotiations with the EU, the Ukrainian side "proceeded from the need to preserve the conditions of free access for Ukrainian steel under the Association Agreement, while taking into account the moratorium on trade defense measures against Ukraine extended by the European Parliament and the Council of the EU in June 2025 until June 2028," Chentsov said.

"This would have been a fair approach toward the limited number of Ukrainian steel enterprises that continue operating under unprecedented security challenges," the ambassador said.

At the same time, he noted that, as a candidate country for EU membership, "we shared the EU's concerns about the impact of distortions in the global steel market on the European steel industry and the need for certain safeguard measures."
