The Energy Department has made it mandatory for all the renewable energy generators of wind and solar to establish real-time data communication with the State Load Despatch Centre (SLDC) for grid stabilisation in the State. In an official release issued on Tuesday, the Electricity Minister R Nirmalkumar cited the notification issued by SLDC on May 30 regarding this requirement for all wind and solar power producers to install real time data mechanism to the computer-based SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system. “The renewable energy manufacturers should integrate the real-time data with the SCADA system within 15 days of receiving the notification,” the release said. It highlighted the issuing of the ‘Tamil Nadu Grid Code – 2026’ by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission, where it has been made mandatory. This measure comes in the wake of renewable energy meeting more than 50% of the State’s total electricity demand. Also wind energy generation prone to heavy fluctuations as it depends on natural environmental conditions, real-time data is essential for a safe and stable operation of the electricity grid. The release said with the State having more than 12,000 wind and solar power producers, less than 10% of them have integrated the real-time data with the SLDC. It also mentions that despite repeated instructions, reminder letters, and high-level meetings, approximately 90% of these green energy producers are not sharing the required real-time data with the Centre.Under these circumstances failure to share real time data would result in the exclusion of 10% of power generation from the power despatch and deviation settlement processes in the first phase, and exclusion of the entire generation after 30 days. The release also warned that if the real time data remains unintegrated even after 45 days, the SLDC will initiate appropriate further action in accordance with Central Electricity Authority (CEA) regulations and inform the TNERC.
