A court has sentenced four inter-State burglars to six years’ rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹80,000 each after completing the trial within five months of the burglary of a foreign money exchange office in Chennai.According to the police, the complainant, Joseph Dominic, 38, of Manapakkam, runs a foreign money exchange office on Parthasarathy Street in Manapakkam. He filed a complaint after finding the shutter lock of his office broken and ₹25,000 in cash stolen one morning. Based on his complaint, the Crime Wing of Nandambakkam Police Station registered a case and launched an investigation.During the investigation, the police examined CCTV camera footage from the scene. The footage revealed that four men had arrived in an autorickshaw, broke open the shop’s lock and stole the cash. Based on the evidence, the police traced the suspects to Surat in Gujarat, where they camped and coordinated with the Surat district police.The four accused were identified as Rigu Amarsingh Chauhan, 27, of Ghaziabad, Jugendra Singh, 19, of Gautam Buddha Nagar district, Abhishek Singh, 20, of Ghaziabad and Yogesh Kumar, 32, of Ghaziabad, all from Uttar Pradesh. They were arrested on January 12, brought to Chennai and remanded to judicial custody.During the investigation, it was also found that the prime accused, Rigu Amarsingh Chauhan, was involved in 13 theft and house-breaking cases registered at various police stations in Uttar Pradesh.After completing the investigation, the police filed a charge sheet before the Alandur Judicial Magistrate Court. The trial concluded on Tuesday, and all four accused were convicted by the court. The police said swift investigation, aided by modern technology and coordinated action across states, enabled the Chennai City Police to trace the accused who had fled to Gujarat by train, secure their conviction, and obtain the sentence within five months of the offence.
