The GPD Win Max 3 is a mini-laptop that packs a lot of horsepower into a compact design. With a 9.06 inch display and a nearly full-sized keyboard and Precision touchpad, it’s a little laptop you can use for productivity on the go. But remove a couple of magnetic panels above the keyboard and you’ll find a set of joysticks for gaming. And with an AMD Strix Halo processor featuring discrete-class Radeon 8060S integrated graphics, this is a little laptop that should offer decent AAA gaming performance. But in order to cram a processor that powerful into this mini-laptop, GPD took an approach that it’s also used on some handhelds with the same chip: instead of a built-in battery, the GPD Win Max 3 uses an external battery pack. There are some pros and cons to that approach when compared with the previous-gen GPD Win Max 2.GPD hasn’t officially introduced the Win Max 3 yet, but several retailers including GPD Store and DroiX have received some preview materials describing the mini-laptop. So while the details in this article may be subject to change, they give us a general overview of what to expect. For one thing, there’s that removable battery pack. The good news is that it’s a 97 Wh battery that should provide reasonably long battery life for normal computing tasks, and hopefully a few hours of run time while gaming. And if your battery does run down quickly, you can purchase an extra battery or two and swap them out as needed. Keeping the battery outside of the laptop also helps dissipate heat from the internal AMD Strix Halo processor. On the other hand, the big battery makes for a bigger, heavier device. Even though the GPD Win Max 3 has a smaller screen than the Win Max 2, it weighs almost half a pound (215 grams) more when the battery is attached. For what it’s worth, that smaller screen sure sounds like it’s using the same (or a similar) display panel as the REDMAGIC Astra gaming tablet. It’s a smaller, slightly lower-resolution screen than the one used in the GPD Win Max 2, but it’s a brighter display with a higher refresh rate.Of course, the biggest advantage the new model has is a GPU that should offer much better gaming performance. But it’s not the only improvement. The Win Max 3 also has faster memory, a Mini SSD for super-speedy removable storage, and a higher-resolution webcam. But there are a few areas where the GPD Win Max 2 actually has the edge: last year’s mini-laptop had two USB4 ports, while this year’s model has just one. GPD has also dropped the OCuLink port from the new model and it looks like the Win Max 3 will have stereo speakers rather than quad speakers.Pricing and availability haven’t been announced yet, but here’s what we know about the upcoming mini laptop so far, and how it compares with its predecessor:GPD Win Max 3GPD Win Max 2 (2025)Display9.06 inches 2400 x 1504 pixels 165 Hz Up to 650 nits (standard), 1050 nits (peak) 10-point capacitive touch Pen support10.1 inches 2560 x 1600 pixels 60 Hz Up to 400 nits 10-point capacitive touch Pen support (4096 levels pressure sensitivity)ProcessorAMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 “Strix Halo” Zen 5 + 5C architecture 16-cores / 32-threads 3 GHz – 5.1 GHz 45-110W TPD or AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 388 “Strix Halo” Zen 5 + 5C architecture 8-cores / 16-threads 3.6 GHz – 5 GHz 45-110W TPDAMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 “Strix Point” Zen 5 + 5C architecture 12-cores / 24-threads 2 GHz – 5.1 GHz 15-35W TPDGraphicsRadeon 8060S 40 x RDNA 3.5 cores Up to 2.9 GHzRadeon 890M 16 x RDNA 3.5 cores Up to 2.9 GHzNPU50 TOPSRAMLPDDR5x-8000 32GB, 64GB, or 128GB 256GB/s bandwidthLPDDR5x-7500 Up to 64GBStorage1 x M.2 2280 (PCIe 4.0 x4) 1 x M.2 2232 (PCIe 4.0 x2) 1 x mini SSD (PCIe 4.0 x1)1 x M.2 2280 (PCIe 4.0) 1 x M.2 2230 (PCIe 4.0) 1 x microSD card readerPorts1 x USB4 Type-C (40 Gbps, DP 1.2) 1 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbps, DP 1.2) 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A (10 Gbps) 1 x HDMI 2.1 1 x 3.5mm audio 1 x DC power2 x USB4 Type-C 2 x USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A 1 x OCuLink 1 x HDMI 1 x 3.5mm audioWirelessWiFi 6E BT 5.3Audio & video5MP webcam Stereo speakers2MP webcam Quad speakersBattery & Charging97 Wh removable battery module 180W charging w/DC port 100W USB-PD67 Wh internal battery 100W USB-PDDimensions207 x 147 x 34mm (without battery) 207 x 180 x 34mm (with battery)227 x 160 x 23mmWeight815 grams (without battery) 985 grams (with fan module, but no battery) 1220 grams (with battery module)1005 grams
