Tottenham Hotspur has secured Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a deal worth approximately £85 million. The transfer represents one of the most significant Premier League signings of the summer window and highlights the sometimes paradoxical economics of relegation.
Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton in the summer of 2025 for an initial fee of £38 million, with an additional £4 million in potential add-ons. That means Tottenham is paying roughly double what West Ham spent just one year ago.
The 21-year-old midfielder reportedly agreed to personal terms of approximately £140,000 per week with Tottenham. That works out to about £7.3 million annually.
Manchester United also expressed serious interest in Fernandes, creating a competitive bidding environment that likely pushed the final number toward the upper end of West Ham’s valuation range. West Ham had pegged their asking price between £80 million and £85 million, and Tottenham ultimately showed willingness to meet it.
The negotiations played out over the second half of June 2026, with reports of Tottenham’s interest intensifying between June 18 and June 30. While personal terms between the player and Tottenham were reportedly settled earlier in the process, the club-to-club discussions took longer to finalize.
