Students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA) on Tuesday staged a protest over the growing wave of armed robberies targeting off-campus hostels, accusing security agencies of responding faster to suppress peaceful demonstrations than to protect them from criminal attacks.
Videos obtained by SaharaReporters showed scores of students chanting protest songs and expressing frustration over what they described as persistent harassment by police and other armed security operatives deployed to the campus during the demonstration.
The students were seen gathering at one of the university's gates, where they reportedly blocked entry to and exit from the institution, forcing academic and administrative activities to a halt.
According to an eyewitness who spoke to SaharaReporters during an interview, the protest was triggered by a series of violent attacks on students living off campus, culminating in a robbery incident on Monday during which dozens of mobile phones were allegedly stolen.
