According to him, although the university had not received any verified threat report, management considered it necessary to take proactive steps to reassure students and prevent any security breach.
The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has deployed soldiers and police officers across its main campus and imposed a ban on commercial motorcycles following the circulation of a viral social media message alleging an imminent terrorists attack and mass abduction of students.
The heightened security measures have triggered anxiety among students and residents despite assurances from both the university management and the Enugu State Police Command that there is no credible intelligence indicating any planned attack on the institution.
SaharaReporters which monitored development at the university's Nsukka campus on Thursday, reports that heavily armed soldiers and police officers have been stationed at major entry points, including the Oba Main Gate and the UBA Gate, where security personnel were conducting stop-and-search operations on vehicles entering and leaving the campus.
The development comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over insecurity in Nigerian educational institutions, particularly after a series of deadly attacks, kidnappings and mass abductions of students in several states across the country.
