MANILA, Philippines—Several labor groups on Tuesday said the P85 increase for minimum wage earners in Metro Manila remained inadequate amid rising costs of basic necessities, renewing earlier calls for a P200 nationwide wage hike.
In a meeting with market vendors and construction workers in Malabon City, Labor Secretary Francis Tolentino announced that minimum wage earners in the National Capital Region would get a “historic” increase to be delivered in two tranches.
An increase of P60 will first take effect on July 19, followed by an additional P25 next year on Jan. 20.
