Suliana Manley has been elected among the 2026 EMBO Members, a distinction that recognizes outstanding achievements and research excellence in the life sciences.EMBO is an organization of more than 2,200 leading life scientists—including 92 Nobel laureates—in Europe and beyond. Its aim is “to support talented researchers at all stages of their careers, stimulate the exchange of scientific information, and help build a research environment where scientists can achieve their best work.”Each year, EMBO elects new members who provide guidance and support for EMBO activities, e.g. serving on the EMBO Council, Committees and Advisory Editorial Boards, and review funding applications. This year's 71 new awardees are being recognized for demonstrating “…their excellence in areas of fundamental research, such as ecology and evolution, epigenetics or structural biology” while “[o]thers perform cutting-edge applied research, for example, in health informatics, immunopharmacology or oncology.”Among the new EMBO Members is Professor Suliana Manley, who leads the Laboratory of Experimental Biophysics in EPFL's School of Basic Sciences, and is jointly affiliated with the Interfaculty Institute of Bioengineering.Manley’s research research combines quantitative cell biology with advanced fluorescence microscopy to study the organization and dynamics of living cells. She has pioneered new super-resolution imaging methods that reveal molecular behavior at the nanoscale and enable large-scale quantitative studies. Applying these approaches, her work has uncovered new principles of mitochondrial dynamics and organelle quality control, providing insights into how molecular interactions give rise to cellular structure and function.EMBO press release
