Five eThekwini Municipal contracts related to domestic refuse collection, street cleaning, and litter-picking services have been extended until December 31, 2026.
eThekwini Municipality's executive directors have been requested to submit comprehensive reports on all contracts due to expire within the next six months, along with corresponding contract replacement programmes, to facilitate proactive planning and timely procurement.
This comes after some councillors and political parties expressed concern over the extension of five existing waste management contracts on a month-to-month basis for a maximum period of six months, from July 1, 2026 to December 31, 2026.
Cyril Xaba, eThekwini mayor, indicated that the Executive Committee (Exco) will strengthen its oversight role on contract management matters to reduce the need for contract amendments.
To ensure the uninterrupted delivery of essential waste management services to all communities in eThekwini, a council meeting was held on Monday where the contract extensions were discussed.
