Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev said that road guardrails in Bulgaria are likely among the most expensive in Europe, arguing that their prices significantly exceed those in countries such as Greece and Germany.
He pointed out that the market is effectively dominated by two companies that repeatedly win public procurement contracts for the supply and installation of crash barriers. According to him, this limited competition is a key factor behind the high costs.
“I suspect that the figure of former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov is behind these two companies,” Demerdzhiev said, adding that the links and structures around the contracts should be examined in detail and openly addressed.
The minister also stated that available data suggests major price inflation compared with standard market levels. He argued that certain practices have effectively restricted access to public tenders for companies outside the established suppliers over a long period.
