The closure of the Durban Drive-In site marks a significant step in the repatriation process for undocumented Malawian nationals.
Malawian President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika returned from a private visit to South Africa on Monday, using the occasion to reassure citizens that his administration remains actively engaged in addressing the complex challenges facing Malawian nationals in the region. Addressing the looming June 30 ‘deadline’, Mutharika emphasised that the date does not signify the end of the matter.
Mutharika said he was glad to be back home and that he had been working while away. He said he was working with the chief secretary, who is the head of the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), and various ministers.
“In South Africa, I had a series of meetings with President Ramaphosa, my brother, on the problems that are happening in this country,” Mutharika said.
“And that we work together because (on Tuesday), the 30th, the deadline is not the end.”
