Image: Henrietta Hassinen / YleYle News8:44More than half of respondents to an opinion poll by the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper say that Prime Minister Petteri Orpo's (NCP) government has failed in its task.Some 52 percent said the government has performed poorly or fairly poorly during its time in office, while just 21 percent of respondents believed that the government has performed well or fairly well.The latest survey results mark the worst showing for Orpo's administration in a HS poll since the four-party coalition came to power just over three years ago.The dissatisfaction among voters looks especially stark when compared to previous governments.A similar poll conducted by Helsingin Sanomat in the summer of 2022, also about 10 months before parliamentary elections, found that just 16 percent of respondents considered the government of Sanna Marin to have been unsuccessful in its task.Markku Jokisipilä, professor of political history at the University of Turku, told HS that the poor numbers for Orpo's government are due to the failure of its three main objectives: achieving economic growth, creating jobs, and curbing the pace of debt accumulation."None of these major objectives have been achieved to the extent that the government envisioned three years ago," Jokisipilä noted.A total of 1,023 people responded to the HS survey. The margin of error for the research results is at most about 3.1 percentage points in either direction at the overall data level.The results of the latest HS poll are in line with similar surveys conducted over recent months, which reveal growing dissatisfaction with the government's performance.
