UN warns against violence as South Africa prepares for anti-migrant demonstrations.
As South Africa braces for planned nationwide anti-immigration protests on Tuesday, the United Nations (UN) has appealed for calm, urging demonstrators and authorities alike to uphold human rights and the rule of law.
Speaking ahead of the planned action, Stéphane Dujarric, chief spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, said the organisation was closely monitoring developments amid growing concerns over possible unrest.
"We are closely monitoring the situation in South Africa regarding the planned protests on June 30 concerning undocumented migrants."
The planned demonstrations, organised by anti-illegal immigration groups, have sparked widespread concern among communities, businesses and civil society organisations.
