Iran’s 2026 World Cup campaign ended the way it began: with a draw. The 1-1 result against Egypt on June 26 at Seattle’s Lumen Field left Iran clinging to hope for roughly 48 hours before subsequent Group G results confirmed their elimination. Iran finished as one of the lowest-ranked third-place teams across the tournament’s expanded group stage.
A five-minute deficit, a nine-minute answer, and a heartbreak in stoppage time
Egypt came out swinging. Mahmoud Saber found the net in just the fifth minute, putting Iran on the back foot before most of the 66,925 fans at Lumen Field had settled into their seats.
Iran’s response was swift. Ramin Rezaeian equalized in the 14th minute, leveling the match.
Then came stoppage time. Iran thought they’d done it. The ball hit the net, the players celebrated, and for a few breathless seconds, the narrative was about to flip entirely. But VAR had other ideas. The goal was ruled offside after review, and the final whistle blew on a 1-1 draw that effectively served as Iran’s elimination notice.
