US Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle met Monday with left-wing former prime minister Alexis Tsipras, whose new Greek Left Alliance, or ELAS, party is polling as the country’s top opposition grouping.
Guilfoyle said in a social media post that she and Tsipras “had a wide-ranging conversation on the strength of the US-Greece relationship and the importance of a secure and prosperous Eastern Mediterranean.”
“Strong partnerships are built through open dialogue, and I appreciated the opportunity to exchange views,” she said.
Guilfoyle said her meeting with Tsipras was part of her “engagements with key Greek political figures.”
On Sunday, she met right-wing former prime minister Antonis Samaras.
