A 'chippy tea' was once a reliably cheap takeaway option at the end of the week for Britain's hard-working families and an easy way to escape the kitchen.But a portion of cod and chips now costs a whopping £11.41 on average - while haddock and chips is only slightly less at £10.29, according to a new report.Industry body Seafish said rising costs for fish, potatoes, oil and energy are putting pressure on owners of the 7,210 fish and chip shops operating across the UK.Many of them are either diversifying their menus with items such as kebabs, pizzas, burgers, chicken wings or masala fish or cutting options to increase efficiency.Staff shortages and recruitment challenges were also cited as a problem for owners, while the risk of closures threatens local high streets and seafood supply chains.The study, which is the first by Seafish to gather the data, revealed cod, haddock, scampi and fishcakes are the most common seafood products found on menus.Haddock dominates in Scotland, Yorkshire and the Midlands; while cod remains the most common choice in other parts of England, Wales and Northern Ireland.Fish supper prices varied across the UK – with a portion averaging £9.53 in Scotland, £10.42 in England, £12.16 in Northern Ireland and £12.91 in Wales.
