The Bigme HiBreak Dual 2 is an upcoming smartphone with two screens. On one side of the phone there’s a 6.13 inch E Ink display, and on the other there’s a 5 inch LCD screen. With a MediaTek Dimensity 8300 processor, the device should offer the performance of a mid-range smartphone, while letting you use a full-color screen with a high refresh rates for certain activities, and a high-contrast, sunlight-visible ePaper screen for others. As the name suggests, this isn’t Bigme’s first dual-screen smartphone. But the first model was… kind of weird. The LCD screen on the original HiBreak Dual is a 1.85 inch, 360 x 3600 pixel circular display that looks like it’s made more for notifications or simple tools like a clock than anything else. The new version also has a weird design: the LCD screen almost looks like Bigme just ripped the front panel from another phone and tacked it onto the back of an existing phone with an E Ink screen. Not only are there enormous bezels above and below the screen, but the entire LCD display section looks sort of like a huge camera bump.Bigme hasn’t revealed many details about the upcoming phone yet, but there’s a preview for an upcoming Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign, and a super-short teaser video on YouTube. So we know that the E Ink display will be available in black and white or color, the phone supports stylus input, and it will ship with Android 16 and support dual SIM 5G networking. The key selling point is obviously the dual screen design. While E Ink displays are great for reading static content, they’re less than stellar for watching videos, playing high-motion games, or using any apps that benefit from smooth scrolling. BigMe and other companies that make eReaders and E Ink tablets do offer software that lets you crank up the refresh rate on E Ink, but you usually sacrifice image quality to do that, and the results still stutter a bit.So having an LCD screen that you can switch to for videos, games, or any time you want to view more than 4096 colors seems like a nice option.Basically the Bigme HiBreak Dual 2 is designed to be two devices in one. Rather than carrying a smartphone and a dedicated E Ink devices like an Onyx BOOX Palma 2 or Xteink X4, you’ve got a single device with two screens, but one processor and OS. There’s no need to keep your eBooks or apps in sync, because they’re all on the same device. That said, it’s not like Bigme has a lot of experience in the smartphone space, so I’d say this is a phone that’s best for folks who don’t expect a lot of long-term support and/or are willing to relegate it to second device status if it doesn’t live up to its promise.via ITHome and NotebookCheck
