Argentina, meanwhile, landed on the comparatively gentler side. Messi’s defending champions could face Cape Verde, Australia, or Brazil on their path to the title match.
Both players are competing in their sixth World Cup. For Ronaldo, now 41, this is almost certainly his last. Messi, at 38, is in the same position.
