A court on the southern island of Crete on Monday jailed a local man it found guilty of setting his apartment on fire and stoning firefighters who turned up to extinguish the blaze, state ERT television reported.
The court in the western town of Hania ordered the defendant to serve three years and three months in prison, without the option of avoiding incarceration pending an appeal of the conviction.
ERT said the man was found to have intentionally set on fire the apartment he owned in the town center, abandoning the site and throwing stones at one of the two fire engines sent to the spot to extinguish the blaze. His motivation was unclear.
The defendant was pursued and arrested soon afterwards by police called to the scene.
