The Academic Council of Mangalore University, at its meeting on Monday, approved the closure of three Bachelor of Arts (BA) programmes in three government first-grade colleges in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts from the academic year 2026-27.The programmes approved for closure are Economics, History and Sociology, and History, Journalism and Kannada, with an intake of 30 students each, at Government First Grade College, Kavoor; Economics, Kannada and Sociology, with an intake of 15 students, at Government First Grade College, Punjalkatte; and English, History and Political Science, with an intake of 30 students, at G. Shankar Government Women’s First Grade College, Ajjarakadu, Udupi.The colleges had proposed closure of the programmes due to a lack of students. An undergraduate programme or course must have a minimum intake of 15 students to be offered.AEDP programmesThe council also approved the Apprenticeship-Embedded Degree Programme (AEDP) in Banking, Financial Services and Insurance for B.Com courses at Government First Grade College, Uppinangady.It also gave an approval for AEDP in Human Resource Operations in B.Com at Government First Grade College, Punjalkatte, and in Logistics in B.Com at Government First Grade College for Women, Puttur.Each AEDP programme will have an intake of 60 students.The council also approved B.Sc. with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics at Government First Grade College for Women, Puttur, with an intake of 40 students.The meeting was held online.
