Islamic Republic President Masoud Pezeshkian announced during a meeting with Ayatollah Shubairi Zanjani that, according to finalized plans, $6 billion out of a total of $12 billion of Iranian funds held in Qatar will be returned to the country.

According to Iranian media reports on Monday, June 28, 2026, Pezeshkian told the prominent Shia Grand Ayatollah that plans have been set for the return of half of Iran’s blocked funds in Qatar, and that follow-up efforts to transfer the remaining $6 billion are ongoing.

Shubairi Zanjani is one of the high-ranking Shia Marjas, or sources of emulation, and a senior professor at the Qom Seminary. Masoud Pezeshkian met with him during his trip to Qom to provide an update regarding the Iranian funds blocked by the United States in Qatar.

However, the president did not provide further details regarding the timeline for the transfer, how Iran will access these funds, or the exact mechanism for returning the money.
