BOSTON — Twenty-nine NHL players scored 20 or more five-on-five goals in 2025-26. JJ Peterka was one of them. When it comes to his shot, the new Boston Bruin is not short on confidence.“When I’m at the best, I can score basically from everywhere,” the 24-year-old wing said Saturday during a video call. “Making a lot of plays and taking the game over. That’s one thing — when I’m really playing at my highest level — that’s one thing I can provide for sure.”His natural wheels and hands, however, led to a degree of production that satisfied neither Peterka nor his previous employer. Just one season after signing a five-year, $38.5 million contract with the Utah Mammoth, Peterka was traded Friday for the No. 23 pick in 2026 and the Florida Panthers’ 2028 first-rounder (top-10 protected). The Mammoth notified Peterka, who lives and trains in Munich during the offseason, shortly before 1 a.m. local time.“I wasn’t really happy with the way I was playing,” Peterka said. “I have way more to give than what I showed.”Winners and losers from the 2026 NHL DraftScott WheelerBruins general manager Don Sweeney said Peterka can be a line driver. But the winger’s primary strength is his shot.Initially, then, coach Marco Sturm could use Peterka on David Pastrnak’s flank, given No. 88’s development as a passer. Here’s what it’d look like from there:Left wingCenterRight wingJJ PeterkaPavel ZachaDavid PastrnakMarat KhusnutdinovFraser MintenMorgan GeekieCasey MittelstadtElias LindholmJames HagensTanner JeannotSean KuralyMark KastelicAlex Steeves“Everyone knows how good of a shot he has,” Peterka said of Pastrnak. “He especially showed last year how good of a playmaker he is with the plays he made. When he has the puck, just try to get open. Especially with the vision he has. He’ll find guys a lot.”
