The tradeBoston Bruins get: JJ PeterkaUtah Mammoth get: 2026 first-round pick (No. 23), 2028 Florida Panthers first-round pick (top 10-protected)Dom Luszczyszyn: When it comes to trades, there’s always some sticker shock when a first-round pick is involved. Multiple firsts? It better be a good player coming back.Peterka might not seem to qualify at first glance, but two things are true here: He’s better than last year’s underwhelming point totals, and late firsts aren’t as valuable as they’re made out to be.Peterka struggled on the surface in his first season with Utah, scoring just 47 points — 21 fewer than the season before. He also averaged under 14 minutes of ice time in the playoffs while scoring zero points in six games. Tough. But a big reason for the scoring drop — during the season, at least — was a lack of power-play time. At five-on-five, he scored 2.09 points per 60 minutes, right in line with his previous two seasons. He also showed an aptitude for driving play, winning his minutes big for the third straight season thanks to his speed and threat off the rush.Peterka seems like the exact type of player Boston needs right now — a guy who can skate and fit seamlessly into the top six. His projected Net Rating, even in a down year, puts him firmly in top-six range, and he’s just entering his prime. Is that worth multiple firsts? For a team with David Pastrnak, Charlie McAvoy and Jeremy Swayman that’s hungry to compete, absolutely. The Bruins are sending the 23rd pick and Florida’s 2028 pick, which can be expected to be in the 23-to-32 range. The level of players selected in that range is generally unlikely to match what Peterka can bring to the table right now.The total pick value of the package comes in at roughly 4.5 wins, 2.4 wins below what Peterka is projected to deliver over the next four years of team control. The certainty of knowing what Peterka is versus the unknown of two late firsts is also part of the draw for a team trying to make the most of its current competitive window. For Utah, it’s a bit more puzzling. The Mammoth are just starting to make strides after making the playoffs last season. If this is a precursor to a big-game move, sign us up and the trade makes perfect sense. If not, it’s hard not to like Boston’s side more. Two first-round picks can be anything, but the odds these two picks end up being as valuable as Peterka have shrunk considerably over the past decade. Smart teams have taken advantage of the shrinking value of late firsts; the Bruins are the latest to make the most of it.Betting on a legit top-six player beats two mystery boxes.Bruins grade: B+
